How To Arrange Home Accessories

Homes can easily become cluttered with accessories, which can quickly make your space feel claustrophobic and a stressful environment to live in. There is a real art to filling up those bare shelves in a way that brings out your style, yet doesn’t make them feel overcrowded. Read on for our top tips on how to arrange home accessories

1. Trays add layers

Hear us out before you dismiss the humble serving tray! Placed neatly on top of a coffee table or console table, a tray can help to add another dimension to an otherwise boring surface. Consider adding other small elements to the tray to build up the height - small plants or paper weights would do the trick. Injecting a splash of colour at the same time.

2. The rule of 3

Now this isn’t a rule that you have to adhere to when it comes to arranging home accessories, but it is worth bearing in mind. Items arranged in odd numbers are more visually appealing than groupings of even-number objects. So rather than buying two doorstops, you should buy three to spread around your home! Three seems to be the ‘magic’ number, but any combination of odd-numbered groupings gives the same effect. The thing to remember is you should try and mix different textured items together to help improve your decorative arrangement.

3. Stacks of books

Books are a great way to spark conversation in your home. Whether you choose to stack them horizontally or vertically, it really doesn’t matter. Going back to the rule of three, you could try stacking three books together with a small decorative item on top. By adding layers this will make your home accessories arrangement a lot easier on the eye, as opposed to a stack of dull books. You could even try mixing some different coloured spines together too.

4. Different heights

Placing two objects next to each other that are the same height can look very boring. Try grouping items of varying heights - you could even use a book on its own to stand an item on. It is easy to forget about the walls within your home too, but they can create a really eye-catching feature if decorated correctly. When hanging artwork, try to avoid rows all in one line - place some pictures higher than others for a more zig-zag effect.

5. Visual triangles

Our final tip for how to arrange home accessories is to create visual triangles. This will automatically get you thinking about proportions, and your home accessories will all start coming together nicely with this tip. If you are styling shelves, this tip is particularly helpful. Stagger objects by height to create a triangle, and layer other decorative accessories around a central piece. Place bigger objects towards the back, and smaller ones to the front and you will see your triangle starting to appear.
