Decorating A Small Space

Small living rooms can be incredibly hard to accessorise, without making them feel cramped and overcrowded. We are here to help inspire you and turn small living room decor into something stylish, no matter what shape it is. A well-designed space can actually feel as comfortable as a larger space, as well as being cosy for all the family.

There is some planning work when it comes to decorating a small space, but done right and it will also be easy maintenance too. An added bonus! Let’s get started with our tips:

1. Use the same colour on walls, woodwork & furniture

Having too many colours in a small space can make it feel quite overwhelming. If you opt for the same colour on walls & woodwork, the room will suddenly feel bigger. As there is no contrast, you will be less aware of the confines of the space. The eye naturally won’t cling onto a second colour, it will glide through the room more easily which opens the space up.

2. Introduce nature

You are probably already aware of the mirror trick, and how they can really help to open up a small space. Another great way to expand the size of a room (visually), is to choose botanical fabrics with green and bright white backgrounds for a fresh feel. If you have a soft white backdrop, try pairing this with velvet green cushions for a lovely contrast that will help bring the outdoors in.

3. Use patterns to perk up plains

Don’t be afraid of using bold colours and patterns in a small place, particularly if you choose a small accessory like our Plaid Highland Cow Draught Excluder. A colour scheme featuring cleverly selected accessories, layered together with textured rugs can make a living room feel really inviting. Eye-catching accessories can provide lots of different focal points throughout.

4. Balance Ying & Yang with your decor

Sometimes contrast works well in a small space. A feminine wall colour, contrasting with a heavy, antique piece of furniture can look lovely. Also, referring back to our previous point, by keeping the floor colour the same as the furniture colour, the room will feel more blended. Helping to make your living area feel more spacious.

5. Repeat a pattern to enhance space

Matching some accessories to your curtains or sofa fabric is becoming an increasingly popular trend in interior design. A light, neutral background colour combined with a pattern to add some brightness works really well in a small space. Take the Plaid Mackenzie Sheep Doorstop for example. This would be the perfect addition to a small space if you have a cream sofa or armchair, decorated with blue tweed cushions.
